The High Court on Sunday asked a city Juba League leader, who still remains fugitive hiring a person to serve out his jail term, to surrender to the trial court by today.

The bench of Justice Md Ashraful Kamal issued the directive to Nazmul Hasan, a leader of Uttara Paschim Juba League unit, after he denied through an affidavit to the court that he was unaware of the jail term in a narcotic case on July 4, 2023, as he was staying abroad.

Nazmul also denied a reported allegation that Mirajul Islam, a 23-year-old from Phulpur in Mymensingh, surrendered to the 8th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court of Dhaka on August 9, 2023, impersonating Nazmul following an underhand negotiation and spent 16 days in jail before he was freed on bail on August 20, 2023.

The High Court granted Mirajul’s ad interim bail until it disposed of the appeal he filed challenging the jail term impersonating Nazmul.

On Sunday the High Court asked Nazmul to surrender to the lower court disbelieving his claims.

The High Court observed that Nazmul remained fugitive and did not spend a single day in jail in the narcotic case.

The court set May 14 for passing further order on the fate of appeal Mirajul filed impersonating Nazmul.

Lawyers said that Mirajul and Nazmul might face a fraudulence case over the crimes of impersonating.

The High Court took up the matter on February 15 after taking cognisance of a report titled ‘Juba League leader’s fraudulence practice in narcotic case’ published by Dainik Kalbela on February 15.

Supreme Court lawyer Manzill Murshid drew the attention of the court to the report.

Manzill brought the issue to the HC when it was scheduled for February 25, 2024, its verdict in the appeal relating to Nazmul’s jail term.
