The High Court said on Tuesday that main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party joint secretary general Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal made contemptuous remarks against the entire judiciary.
The bench of Justice Md Iqbal Kabir and Justice Md Akhtaruzzaman made the remarks in the presence of Alal, who appeared in the court responding to contempt of the court proceedings brought against him on suo motu on April 19.
The court quoted Alal as saying that he said in his recent remarks in a social media platform that the judiciary had now become the main rival to the mass people although there were cheapest slogans against the police in the past.
‘We do not want such a rule of law in Bangladesh. We want a rule of justice,’ the court quoted the remarks made by Alal. Â
The court exempted Alal from his appearance during the next proceedings on May 21 when it would give verdict on the ruling.  Â
Alal’s lawyer Zainul Abedin told the High Court that his client, who is also a Supreme Court lawyer, apologised for his remarks.
The court said that it expressed its concern and asked Alal to explain in four weeks why he should not be prosecuted for his remarks, as he is a lawyer of the court.
Zainul said that Alal would neither fight the contempt ruling nor make any argument to justify his remarks.
The court said that it would give order on May 21.
