
At least three people died with heat stroke symptoms as the ongoing mild to moderate heatwave continued for the second day on Thursday, amid forecasts of it extending up to the next three days in different parts of the country.
‘The ongoing mild to moderate heatwave may continue across the country on Friday, though there is a chance of rain in the Dhaka, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Khulna, and Sylhet divisions,’ said Monwar Hossain, a meteorologist at the Bangladesh Metrological Department.Â
He said that the temperature might not come down before May 20, when more rain was expected.
‘The day and night temperatures will remain the same for the next three days. But, the temperature may decrease slightly in some places on Saturday and Sunday,’ he added.
Day and night temperatures may remain nearly unchanged, and discomfort may persist due to an increase in moisture incursion, according to the BMD’s latest weather bulletin for the next 24 hours, commencing at 6:00pm on Thursday.
On Thursday, the Ishwardi area of Pabna district recorded the highest temperature of 39.5 degrees Celsius, while Tetulia in Panchagarh recorded the lowest temperature of 23.1 degrees Celsius.
The ongoing heatwave may decrease in some places of the north and northeast regions of the country, while day temperatures may fall by 1C or 2C and night temperatures may fall slightly over the country for the next 24 hours, commencing at 6:00pm on Saturday.
Dhaka recorded a maximum temperature of 37.7 C on Thursday against 36.3C on Wednesday, showing an increase of 1.4C.
The government issued a fresh heat alert for 48 hours on Wednesday, leaving farmers worried as it drained them of a lot of money last month to keep their poultry birds and fish alive.
Two people died of heat stroke symptoms in the Ullapara area of Sirajganj district while harvesting paddy in the scorching sun on Thursday afternoon.
The deceased are identified as Bishnupada Mazumder, 51, a farmer of Rahimpur village at Bangala union in Ullapara upazila, and Saidul Islam Bablu, 57, of Binyekpur village in the upazila.
Citing physicians of the Upazila Health Complex, Ullapara Model Police Station officer-in-charge Asif Mohammad Siddiqul Islam said that they died of heat stroke.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· staff correspondent in Sylhet reported that a 35-year-old man died of heat stroke symptoms near Zindabazar City Shopping Centre in Sylhet city.
The deceased is identified as Shafiqul Islam, 35, a resident of Nayagram under Juri upazila in Moulvibazar district.
Sylhet Shahid Shamsuddin Ahmed District Hospital resident physician Mizanur Rahman said that Shafiqul was taken to the hospital dead.
‘Members of the deceased›s family told us that he died while standing under the scorching sun,’ he added.
At least 26 students at Hossainpur Model Government Primary School fell sick due to the hot weather.
Hossainpur upazila nirbahi officer Anindo Mandal said that 25 of them were given primary treatment.
‘One student required hospital admission but was doing well,’ he said.
