The members of the Rapid Action Battalion arrested a couple from Chattogram’s Sitakunda upazila who identified them as National Security Intelligence officials, and swindled money from people.
The arrested are Mumtaz Begum, 34, and her husband Mujibur Rahman, 46.
They were arrested from Premtola College Road area of Sitakunda on Thursday, senior assistant director of the RAB-7 Mo Sharif-ul-Alam said in a media statement on Friday.
RAB also seized 960 Yaba tablets from their possession.
The RAB said that victim Manjur Alam was seeking a job after passing SSC. He met Mumtaz Begum at her sister’s wedding in 2021. At that time, Manjur came to know that Mumtaz Begum is the deputy director of NSI, Chattogram unit.
Pretending to be an NSI official, Mumtaz Begum took more than Tk 34 lakh from Manjur in the name of giving a job in NSI. ‘And her husband Mujibur Rahman helped her in this fraudulence,’ he said.
They were handed over to the Sitakunda police station for legal action, said the RAB official.
