The authorities of Jahangirnagar University on Wednesday extended the tenure of its current registrar’s job for one more year on a contractual basis, flouting the University Grants Commission’s directives for appointing registrars at universities.

A notice of the university confirmed the extension of the registrar job of Abu Hasan for one more year from June 5, mentioning that the appointment was made at a meeting of the university syndicate on May 23.

Abu Hasan went on retirement on May 28, 2024.

President of the university syndicate, professor Nurul Alam, also the vice-chancellor of the university claimed that the appointment was made in line with the interest of the university.

A UGC notification on March 20, 2022, directed all public universities to employ professionals permanently from respective arenas after publishing public advertisements.

‘We directed the universities to employ personnel through circulars. If suitable candidates cannot be found after two successive attempts, the university has to recruit personnel following the UGC prescription’, UGC secretary Ferdous Zaman said.

The UGC official also termed the appointment of retired personnel on a contractual basis as violation of UGC rule.

Earlier on May 27, 2024, JU gave its incumbent treasurer professor Rasheda Akhter an additional charge of registrar for four days as the outgoing registrar Abu Hasan went on Leave Preparatory to Retirement.

The UGC directive, however, states that the universities should not appoint university teachers, retired government officers, military officials, and college teachers to the registrar post for a provisional or temporary period.
