
A Sunamganj tribunal on Thursday sentenced a sub-inspector of police to life imprisonment for raping a woman after intimidating her during investigation into a case.
The convict, Azizur Rahman Chowdhury, is a resident of Habiganj and he had been working as a sub-inspector at Chhatak police station in Sunamganj when the incident took place in 2012, the tribunal sources said.
Sunamganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal prosecutor Nantu Roy confirmed the verdict of the tribunal.
‘Judge Roknuzzaman of the tribunal has announced the verdict in the rape case at noon as the allegation brought against him has not been found to be true,’ the prosecutor said.
He said that the accused was present in the tribunal while the verdict was announced after completion of cross-examination in the rape case.
According to the case statement, Azizur Rahman while working as a sub-inspector of the Chhatak police station was assigned to investigate a case filed by a plaintiff of Chhatak Municipality.
While investigating the case, the officer threatened a woman involved in the case and raped her several times.
Later, the victim filed a case against Azizur Rahman with a district judicial court on September 10, 2012.
After filing of the case, Azizur Rahman was suspended primarily from his job and later fired, the court sources said.Â
