A former central vice-president of Bangladesh Chhatra League and his associate were beaten by the traders of Palashi Bazar in Dhaka Sunday night over extortions.

A case was filed with Chawk Bazar police station on accusation of extortion against the BCL leader, Mehedi Hasan, and his accomplice Shohidul Islam. The police said that the duo was sent to jail.

Traders and witnesses said that the two leaders of the Ruling Awami League’s student wing were handed over to the police as they allegedly used to extort money from them.

‘When they came for extortion, we refused to pay today. He [Mehedi] punched me and later came back with machetes. Seeing them coming, I fled the scene,’ Nazrul Islam, a trader at the market, said.

He alleged that the BCL leaders used to come to the market every day to collect toll.

Palashi Dokan Malik Samity former general secretary Mahbubul Haque said, ‘When trader Nazrul Islam fled away, the attackers came to hack me wielding the machete. Traders then rescued me, caught the duo, and gave them a good thrashing.’

They were later taken away by the police, he said.

Mehedi was also a former president of Salimullah Muslim Hall unit of BCL.

Chawk Bazar police station officer-in-charge Kazi Shahiduzzaman told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they had taken two accused to the police station in the mid-night hour after giving them first aid.

He said that Obaid Ullah, a businessman on behalf of Palashi Bazar traders, filed an extortion case against Mehedi and Shohidul.

‘We have sent them to the court and the court sent them to jail,’ the OC added.

Asked about the matter, Dhaka University proctor Maksudur Rahman said that he heard the news of detaining a former student of the university by the traders at Palashi Bazar over toll collection.

‘As he is not a current student of the university, university authorities have no responsibility in this matter,’ he said.

Salimullah Muslim Hall provost Iqbal Mamun said that Mehedi was staying at the hall illegally defying the hall authority’s order.
