
Ain O Salish Kendra, a rights organisation, in a statement on Monday condemned the incident of a woman who died allegedly in police custody at Abhaynagar police station in Jashore on Sunday.
The rights body demanded a fair investigation and trial of the incident, said a press release.
The custodial death victim is Afroza Begum, 40, wife of Abdul Jalil, of Dhopadi Crossing of ward number 4 of Nawapara municipality.
According to media reports, police detained Afroza Begum along with 30 Yaba pills at about 1:30am on Sunday.
Police said that she was taken to the Abhaynagar police station.
Later in the morning after 8:00am, she was rushed to Abhaynagar Upazila Health Complex as she felt sick.
After the medication, she was then taken to the police station but she was again taken to the upazila health complex as her condition deteriorated.
Later, she was referred to Jashore General Hospital for better treatment, where she was declared dead at about 11:00am.
Regarding her death, Abdul Jalil, husband of the victim lodged a complaint with executive magistrate Md Nabid Hossain and assistant superintendent of police Jahidur Rahman.
Family members alleged that police physically tortured Afroza.
However, police denied the allegation.
Hasib Mohammad Ali, a medical officer of Jashore General Hospital, told journalists that the woman was brought dead to the hospital.
ASK in its statement said that physical abuse of a person in custody was illegal and police arresting a woman in the middle of the night was unacceptable.
The rights body also demanded a judicial inquiry into Afroza Begum鈥檚 death giving utmost importance to her family鈥檚 allegations.
