A Dhaka metropolitan court on Thursday orders appointment of receivers to handle the seized property and assets of former inspector general of police Benazir Ahmed while the Anti-Corruption Commission allowed him time until June 23 to appear before the commission.

On May 28, the commission summoned Benazir to appear before it on June 6 and his wife Jissan Mirza and their daughters to appear on June 9 to make statements on the allegations of amassing illegal wealth.

Commission secretary Khorsheda Yasmin told journalists on Thursday that the inquiry team of the commission issued another notice ‘fixing June 23 as the next date’ for Benazir’s personal hearing.

It is still not clear whether Benazir filed a petition with the commission seeking time.

When asked whether the commission set the new date following his time petition, Khorsheda said, ‘Today was scheduled for his hearing, but our inquiry team fixed the new date as he was not present.’

In another development, Dhaka metropolitan senior special judge Mohammad As-Shams Jaglul Hossain accepted a petition filed by the commission for the appointment of receivers to look after the immovable property of Benazir and his family, said the commission’s lawyers Mahmud Hossain Jahangir.

Following the order, local deputy commissioners were appointed receivers to look after the seized assets of Benazir and his family in Cox’s Bazar and Madaripur, while Savar upazila nirbahi officer was appointed receiver for their property in Savar.

The Gopalganj deputy commission and officials of the fisheries department will take charge of the lands and water bodies in the district respectively.

Besides, the court also asked the commission to inform it the overall situation regarding four flats of Benazir’s family in the capital’s Gulshan.

After knowing the complete information, the court would appoint a receiver for the flats, said the lawyer.

Earlier, based on a media report, the commission on April 18 decided to carry out an inquiry into wealth of Benazir and his family.

Earlier, a Dhaka court ordered the seizure of assets, including four flats in 202 deeds in the name of Benazir and his family members following a petition of the commission, while the court also frozen 33 financial accounts, including 27 bank accounts of them.
