Unidentified assailants shot a ward-level leader of the ruling Awami League in village Raghabpur Fakirpara under Sadar Upazila in Pabna district Saturday evening.
The deceased, Babu Sheikh of Manoharpur village under the upazila, is a former president of Goeshpur Union鈥檚 word no 9 unit of AL.
Pabna additional superintendent of police Masud Alam said that a group of assailants opened fire targeting Babu Sheikh while he was in a shop at Raghabpur Fakirpara intersection at about 9:30pm on Saturday.
He said that the attackers fled the scene, leaving Babu in a pool of blood.
The police officer said that the locals immediately rescued him and rushed him to Pabna General Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead.
No case was lodged, and none was arrested in this connection until filing the report at about 11:00pm, Masud Alam said.
