The Rapid Action Battalion on Monday night arrested six youths at a market in Sylhet and recovered 241 stolen mobile phone sets, 10 tabs and 1 device for changing the International Mobile Equipment Identity from their possession.

The arrested, Najibul Islam Zeblu, 22, resident of Lawai Ummar Kabul village under Dakshin Surma, Mohammed Emon, 22, and Abdur Rahman, 22, are resident of Dharadharpur village under the same police station, while Mizanur Rahman, 22, resident of Silam Tikarpara under Moglabazar, Md Abdur Rahim, 28, resident of Lamapara under Shah Paran police station of Sylhet Metropolitan Police, and Md Masud Miah, 23, resident of Habiganj’s Bhabanipur village, the RAB said.


The RAB-9 media officer Md Moshihur Rahman Sohel on Tuesday disclosed the information at a press conference at the battalion’s headquarters in the Shah Paran Bypass area of the city.

He said that they conducted a drive at the 2nd floor of Karim Ullah Market at Bandar Bazar in the city on Monday night, and arrested them.

He said that they recovered 2 desktop computers and Tk 75,550 in cash.

There are more than one organised syndicates of hijackers and thieves of mobile phones in the city and the arrested are the active members of it, he said.

‘The arrested admitted in the interrogation that they could change the IMEI of any cell phone of any kind of brand within a minute,’ said Moshihur Rahman.

He also mentioned that the people involved in different serious crimes usually bought these stolen mobile phones to use while committing crimes.

‘The process to handover the arrested to police for taking further legal step against them is underway,’ he said.
