Home minister Asaduzzaman Khan told Jatiya Sangsad on Wednesday that 363 foreign nationals were detained in Bangladesh jails.

The minister gave the information in response to a question of reserved seat lawmaker Farida Yasmin in the ongoing budget session of the parliament.

According to the information of the minister, citizens of 16 countries are detained in Bangladesh, and most of them are from India.

He said that 212 citizens of India were detained in the jails of Bangladesh. Among the Indians, 11 were prisoners, 53 were executed and 148 stayed in jails even though their jail terms ended.

There are 114 detainees of Myanmar in Bangladesh jails, of which 58 are prisoners, 50 convicts and six are waiting to be released as their terms end.聽

Among other countries, there are seven Pakistani nationals, six each from Nigeria and Malaysia, four each from China and Belarus, two each from Cameroon and Peru, and one each from America, Botswana, Georgia, Tanzania, Malaya, and Angola.

In response to a question of Awami League lawmaker Mahbubur Rahman, Asaduzzaman Khan said that all the camps of forcibly displaced Myanmar citizens, also called Rohingya people, were under surveillance by law enforcers as the armed groups were identified and brought under the purview of the law.

From August 25, 2017, to May 31, 2024, 994 displaced Myanmar nationals have been arrested in murder and weapons cases, he said.

He said that individuals and institutions disturbing public security in Rohingya camps were being brought under intelligence surveillance.

Regular operations are also being conducted to suppress miscreants, the minister said.
