Main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party vice chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu said on Friday that former police inspector general Benazir Ahmed and former army chief General Aziz Ahmed tarnished the image of the police and army.
He came up with the remarks while addressing a sit-in programme in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka, arranged by Bangladesh Nagorik Odhikar Andolan demanding release of all detained politicians including BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.
He alleged that AL government promoted Benazir, who looted everywhere in the country and made police controversial and tarnished image of police.
The BNP leader also said that the government had appointed Aziz Ahmed as army chief, who tarnished the image of armed forces.
Dudu said, 鈥楽uch a looter and oppressive government had never come to power in the history of Bangladesh.鈥�
The government came to power through the so-called election forcefully, but it has no legitimacy. So, the government must resign and hand over power to a caretaker government, he said.
鈥楾here will be no relief for the people of the country from the ongoing political crisis until the resignation of the AL government,鈥� he added.
He also demanded the release of all detained party leaders and activists, including party chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia.
Criticising the government鈥檚 eviction drive against Harijan, who cleans Dhaka city, the BNP leader urged the government to change its decision.
Addressing the event, Abdus Salam, adviser to BNP chairperson, said people are now passing a hard life amid a financial crisis. Even they could not buy the sacrificial animals for Eid-ul-Azha.
鈥楾he AL government created two classes 鈥� upper class and lower class 鈥� in society, but there is no place for the middle class,鈥� he added.
He also criticised government for not arresting former IGP Benazir Ahmed despite various charges against him.
