The ongoing floods in Sylhet division affected over 1,000 educational institutes across Sylhet, Sunamganj, and Moulvibazar districts.

According to the statistics from district education and primary education officials, at least 1,064 primary schools, secondary schools, colleges, and madrassahs were affected by the floods as of Thursday.


Of these, 437 educational institutes were being used as shelters for flood-affected people.

‘Some institutes will only require cleaning after the flood, while others need repairs,’ said the officials.

Educational institutes at primary, secondary, and higher secondary levels have been closed since June 13 for Eid-ul-Azha and summer vacations.

Primary-level institutes are set to reopen on July 2, while others will open on June 26.

Nearly 2.5 million people have been marooned over four days as fresh floods struck Sylhet and surrounding districts, caused by heavy rain and continuous water flow from upstream Meghalaya and Assam in India.

Floodwaters submerged houses in low-lying areas, including Sylhet divisional city, on Monday, the day of Eid-ul-Azha.

On May 28, a flash flood affected more than one million people in the district, including 30 wards out of 42 in the city, adding immense suffering to the flood-stricken people, who had endured another devastating flood in less than three weeks.

According to a report from the Sylhet district primary education office, under the primary and mass education ministry, the district has 1,477 government primary schools.

Out of these, 489 were flood-affected and 226 were being used as shelters as of Thursday, said district primary education officer Shakhawat Ershed.

The Sylhet district education office reported 673 secondary schools, higher secondary colleges, and madrassahs in the district. Of these, 83 were

flood-affected and 247 were being used as shelters, according to district education officer Abu Sayed Md Abdul Wadud.

In Moulvibazar, the district primary education office reported 1,050 government primary schools, with 92 affected by floods and 64 being used as shelters.

The Moulvibazar district education office reported 30 flood-affected secondary schools, higher secondary colleges, and madrassahs, with 38 more being used as shelters.

In Sunamganj, the district primary education office reported 1,475 government primary schools, with around 370 affected by floods.

Sunamganj district education officer Md Jahangir Alam said that they were collecting statistics on flood-affected educational institutes and had yet to file a complete report.

The most affected educational institutes in Sunamganj are in the upazilas of Bishwambharpur, Chhatak, Dowarabazar, Shantiganj, and Sadar, according to Jahangir Alam.
