The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has said that courts are able enough to catch wrongdoers wherever they hide.
‘One should not forget that the hands of the courts are long enough to catch hold of wrongdoers wherever they hide,’ the apex court made the observation in the full verdict of an appeal.
Former chief judicial magistrate of Cumilla Masud Rana filed the appeal challenging his 30-day jail term handed down on him by the High Court on December 10, 2023, for initiating trial proceedings of a criminal case even if the High Court earlier stayed the case proceedings.
The full verdict was posted on the Supreme Court’s website on Sunday.
On February 6, 2024, a five judge-bench headed by chief justice Obaidul Hassan, found Sohel Rana guilty of contempt of court for flouting an order issued by the High Court.
The apex court, however, gave Sohel Rana clemency by reprimanding him severely and issuing a warning that he would not repeat contempt in future. Â
‘It is our expectation that this incident serves as a lesson for all judicial officers, reaffirming the principle that the authority of the judiciary must be respected and upheld at all times,’ the Appellate Division observed.
It said that since this was Sohel Rana’s first offence and he promised never to do any act of omission in defiance of or in disobedience to any order of the Supreme Court ‘we have taken a view and seriously censure and warn him about his conduct……’
