Shafiur Rahman

Today is the 13th anniversary of the death of classical music connoisseur and founding general secretary of the ‘Shuddha Sangeet Prasar Goshthi’, Shafiur Rahman.

Born on October 22, 1932 at Maldah, West Bengal in British India, Shafiur Rahman moved to Dhaka in the early ‘50s.


A pioneer of the movement for promotion of classical music in the country, he established the ‘Shuddha Sangeet Prasar Goshthi’ in 1974, which used to organise classical music performances at the Bishwa Sahitya Kendra in Dhaka.

For his contribution to music, Shafiur Rahman received several awards, including ‘Ustad Mozammel Hossen Memorial Award’, ‘Sur Saptak Sangeet Bidyapith Award’, ‘Baithaki Sangeet Padak’, ‘Sargam Sammanana’, ‘Bulbul Lalitakala Academy Sammanana’ and ‘Bishwa Sahitya Sammanana’.

Shafiur Rahman passed away on June 27 in 2011 in Dhaka.
