Rail communications between Chattogram and the rest of the country were disrupted for three hours after a fire broke out in the locomotive of a goods train in the Ambariya area under Mirsarai upazila on Thursday morning.
No one was reported as injured in the incident.
Passengers, however, suffered after being stuck at different stations.
Baratakia railway station master M Samsudoha said that the fire originated from the locomotive of the train which was noticed by its loco master at first while the train was near the Baratakia railway station in the Ambariya area.
The loco master informed the fire service about the fire by calling 999 at about 7:00am, said Mirsarai fire service station officer Imam Hossain Patowari.
He said that they rushed to the spot at about 8:00am and doused the fire within 20 minutes.
After the fire came under control, a relief train rescued the damaged locomotive and took it to the Baratakia station.
M Samsudoha said that after the fire broke out; all Chattogram-bound trains on the down line remained suspended for three hours.
On the up-line, the Dhaka-bound trains remained suspended for one hour, he said.
Since 11:00am in the morning, all trains have been running according to schedule, he added.
During the suspension of the services passengers on the stranded trains at different stations on the Chattogram route were seen waiting.
