Another case was filed on Friday against 182 people in connection with the factional clash between two groups of the ruling Awami League at Bagha upazila in Rajshahi that left one leader killed and over fifty people injured on June 22.

Md Abul Kalam, a resident of Tepukuria village at the upazila, filed the case against 32 named people and 100 to 150 unnamed people with the Rajshahi Senior Judicial Magistrate Court 1 and Speedy Trial Tribunal.

Plaintiff’s lawyer Ziaur Rahman said that judge Hadiuzzaman took cognisance of the case and asked the Bagha police officer-in-charge to record it as a first information report.

In the case, Shahinur Rahman alias Pintu, president of Bagha upazila deeds writers association and joint general secretary of upazila Jubo League, was made the prime accused while Samiul Alam, general secretary of the deeds writers association and convener of the Pakuria union unit AL, Rajshahi district Swechchhasebak League president Roknuzzaman, Bagha municipal AL president Abdul Kuddus, general secretary Mamun Hossain, and Bagha thana AL former organising secretary Wahed Sadek, among others, were also accused.

All the named accused persons are followers of AL lawmaker from Rajshahi-6 constituency and former state minister for foreign affairs Shahriar Alam.

On June 22, two factions of AL leaders and activists clashed at Bagha upazila, leaving at least 50 activists injured.

Of the 18 injured who were admitted to Bagha Upazila Health Complex, Bagha upazila AL general secretary Ashraful Islam Babul and Arani union parishad chairman Rafiqul Islam were referred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

Babul, however, succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at the RMCH on Wednesday afternoon.

Following the clash, Shahinur Rahman, joint general secretary of Bagha upazila Juba League and a follower of lawmaker Md Shahriar Alam, filed a case with the Bagha police station against 46 named and 200-300 unnamed persons on Sunday noon.

The police then arrested eight people, including Pakuria union parishad chairman Merajul Islam Meraj, on Thursday.

Meanwhile, leaders and activists of Rajshahi district and city units Jubo League, Swechchhasebak League, Sramik League, and Chhatra League, staged demonstrations on Friday, protesting against Shahriar’s ‘intentional and hatred’ speech towards AL presidium member and Rajshahi City Corporation mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton over the death of Ashraful Islam Babul.

They also declared Shahriar Alam ‘unwanted’ in the district and burnt effigies of Shahriar Alam for his speech.

Earlier, while attending Babul namaz-e-janaza on Thursday afternoon, Shahriar Alam blamed AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, Rajshahi-3 constituency lawmaker Asaduzzaman Asad, and Bagha upazila parishad newly elected chairman and Rajshahi district AL joint general secretary Layeb Uddin Lavlu for the death of Bablu and announced that file a case would be filed against the trio for baking Babul’s killers.
