The Society of Surgeons of Bangladesh on Sunday inaugurated a training centre for its members to provide them with hands-on training in performing safe and effective surgery.

The training centre was established in the capital鈥檚 Bangla Motor in cooperation with the United States-based Medtronic, a global leader in medical technology, services, and solutions.

Nationally and internationally renowned surgeons were present at the inauguration event.

A memorandum of understanding also was signed between the SOSB and Medtronic for extending cooperation.

At the ceremony, speakers said that once surgeons had to travel abroad to sharpen their skills which now they would get here in the country.

They said that with the development of technology huge improvement took place in the medical sector that the surgeons had to learn through hands-on training and implement their knowledge in practice.

SOSB鈥檚 general secretary and Dhaka Medical College Hospital surgery professor Nur Hossain Bhuiyan Shaheen said that nationally and internationally renowned surgeons would teach trainee surgeons at the centre.

He said that some 1,500 surgeons were already enrolled with them and more others would be enrolled in phases.

New surgeons will be enrolled every three months at a minimum charge, he added.

Some 50-60 surgeons can receive the non-residential training at the centre, he also said.

SOSB鈥檚 immediate past president AHM Towhidul Alam said that establishing the training centre was possible because some people extended their support to enhance the skill of the surgeons.

He hoped that the centre would work as a platform of sharing knowledge.

SOSB former president professor Kanak Kanti Barua also hoped that pragmatic training for surgeons would increase their skill in safe surgery with the latest technology.

Medtronic officials said that as part of their investment in medical education and training they supported the SOSB and not for profit.

Medtronic鈥檚 senior director for Singapore and subcontinent Darren Lim said that they wanted to see safe and effective use of medical products for the wellbeing of the patients.

SOSB鈥檚 joint general secretary professor SM Quamrul Akhter Sanju, Asia Pacific Hernia Society鈥檚 immediate past secretary general professor Sarder A Nayeen, Medtronic鈥檚 training and education director for southeast Asia Linda Soo, Bangladesh manager Imtiaz Firoz, among others, spoke at the event where over a hundred physicians were present.
