The National Human Rights Commission Bangladesh has asked the police to inform the commission about the arrest of the accused and submit a progress report by July 30 after probing the incident of vandalising a Lalon devotee’s house in Kushtia Sadar upazila.

A copy of the suo moto order was also sent to the Kushtia deputy commissioner and president of the district’s Human Rights Violation Prevention and Protection Committee over  the incident of vandalising the house of Lalon follower China Begum, 90.

The NHRC on Sunday took the move following a television channel’s online report headlined ‘Elderly woman Lalon devotee’s house vandalised through announcement at mosque’, according to a NHRC press release.

A complaint was filed with the Kushtia Sadar Police Station, against 45-50 people, including former Union Parishad member Enamul Haque, Moshrraf Hossain and Anar Mondal and Saidul Haji over the incident that took place on Wednesday.

The NHRC claimed that a case was filed with the Kusthia Sadar police station in connection with the damaging over Tk 1 lakh property of the singer at Takimara village of the Sadar upazila, the release said.

Kusthia Sadar police station officer-in-charge Sheikh Muhammad Sohel Rana, however, claimed that the victim lodged a complaint, not a case.

‘I have settled the issue through negotiation in presence of both parties the day before yesterday [Friday]. The complaint has been dismissed as the issue was resolved,’ the OC added.

Asked about the suo moto of the NHRC, he said that he did not know about the matter.

A total of 25 eminent citizens, including rights activists, academics and cultural activists in a joint statement on Sunday protesting at vandalising the house of Lalon devotee China Begum.
