The additional chief judicial magistrate court in Natore on Sunday sent nine activists of the ruling Awami League and its youth front Jubo League to jail for attacking Shahidul Islam Bachchu, acting convener of the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s Natore district unit.
Judge Md Rawshan Alam passed the order after the nine activists appeared in court, seeking bail, said court inspector Mostafa Kamal.
He stated that 14 out of the 16 named accused in the case appeared before the court in the afternoon to seek bail.
‘The court, however, granted bail to five accused and sent the remaining nine, including the prime suspect Rashidul Islam Koyel, to jail,’ Kamal added.
Earlier, Bachchu’s wife Sultana Pervin, who has been undergoing treatment at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka, filed a case with Natore police station. She accused 16 named and 40-50 unnamed Awami League and Jubo League activists, all followers of Natore-2 constituency lawmaker Shahfiqul Islam Shimul, of beating and hacking her husband, while he was heading to BNP party office to attend a rally, demanding the release of Khaleda Zia on Wednesday.
The activists also beat up five other BNP leaders on their way to the rally and attacked the rally itself, leaving chief guest and forest and environment affairs secretary of the party Mohammad Mossaddeq Hossain Bulbul injured.
Of the injured, five were admitted to different hospitals in Natore, while Bachchu was referred to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University.
Bachchu had been beaten and hacked all over his body, and the wrist of his right hand was nearly severed.
