
The Chattogram Additional Metropolitan Session Judge court-4 on Wednesday sentenced eight people including the then project director of the contractor firm concerned to seven-year jail each in a case over Chattogram under-construction flyover collapse that killed 13 people in 2012.
Judge Shariful Islam Bhuiyan of the court handed down the punishment.
The court also fined them Tk 3 lakh each, in default, to suffer six months more in jail.
The convicts are— project director of contractor firm Mir Akhter and Parisa Trade System’s Gias Uddin, Manjurul Islam, engineer Abdul Jalil, Aminur Rahman, Abdul Hye, Mosharraf Hossain, Shahjahan Ali and Rafiqul Islam.
All of them were former employees of contractor firm Mir Akhter and Parisa Trade System.
According to the prosecution, 13 people were killed and 50 others injured when three girders of an under-construction flyover in Bahaddarhat area of Chattagram port city collapsed on November 24, 2012. Chattogram Development Authority was building the flyover.
On November 26, a case was filed with Chandgaon Police Station on charge of negligence of duty.
25 people including three CDA officials were accused in the case.
Then inspector SM Shahidul Islam submitted a chargesheet against eight people on October 24, 2013, after excluding the names of 12 people including the three CDA officials, managing director of the contractor firm and managing director of the advisory organisation MA Matin.
