
Independent lawmaker and former Awami League minister Abdul Latif Siddique has raised an allegation that Jatio Muktijoddha Council or Jamuka has given fake freedom fighter certificates.
The lawmaker, who is also a member of the parliamentary standing committee on the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, raised the allegation in a meeting of the committee held on June 12 and it was placed at a meeting held Wednesday at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, several Jatiya Sangsad secretariat officials confirmed the news to ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.
At the meeting, Latif Siddiqui said, ‘Jamuka took steps to prepare the list of new freedom fighters after verification in 2017. As a result, those who were not freedom fighters in 2016 are now seen as valiant freedom fighters.’
There are allegations that some of them obtained fake certificates in association with this organisation, he said, adding that the real freedom fighters are not getting welfare due to this.
He advised the ministry to exercise caution.
AL lawmaker Shajahan Khan said at the meeting that it was not easy to create a new list of freedom fighters after so many years of independence.
Shajahan Khan, a member of the Jamuka, said, ‘While doing the selection, we have to face such a situation that we do not know them.’
Citing an example, he said that one brother giving false testimony against another brother due to a land dispute.
He said that during the interview of an uncle and niece, the uncle gave false testimony against his nephew, the son of his freedom fighter brother.
Later, before leaving for Hajj, the uncle came and told the committee that he had given false testimony.
His brother fought the War of Independence, the uncle added.
Shajahan Khan was the chairman of the JS body in the 11th parliament.
At that time, he took the initiative to publish a list of collaborators.
He formed a sub-committee at that time in this regard.
He told the media that he released a partial list, though not the full list.
The list, however, was not published in the end, Shajahan added.
The parliament secretariat officials said that the liberation war affairs ministry informed the committee that it was making preparations to produce documentaries based on the interviews of 14 eminent freedom fighters, including the current president Mohammed Shahabuddin and former president Md Abdul Hamid.
Under the project titled ‘Birer Kanthe Bir Gantha’, the accurate history of the War of Independence war will be collected and presented to the new generation, they said.
