
At least six people were injured as police and quota protesters locked in a clash when the protesters from Cumilla University tried to block the Dhaka-Chittagong highway near their university Thursday afternoon.
Witnesses said that the police obstructed the protesters when the latter tried to put blockade on the highway and chasing and counter-chasing occurred between them.
They said that the agitators also threw brick bats targeting the police and the police lobbed teargas shells to disperse the agitating students.
At least six people – three students and three police personnel were injured during the clash and all the injured ones were taken to Cumilla Medical College Hospital, officials at the hospital said.
Cumilla additional superintendent of police (crime) Khandker Ashfaquzzaman alleged that the students attacked them and ‘a number of’ the force members were injured in the attack.
He said that they were trying to calm the protesters.
Cumilla University proctor Quazi Omar Faruque Siddiqui said that two injured ones – one student and a journalist – were taken to the university medical centre and was then sent to Cumilla Medical College Hospital following the clash.
