The Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University at a seminar on Tuesday revealed a population-based cancer registry data for the first time to inform the cancer situation in the country.

The seminar was organised at the conference hall of the university鈥檚 Super Specialised Hospital, said a press release.


The BSMMU pro-vice-chancellor Professor Dr Md Moniruzzaman Khan was present as chief guest at the seminar, which was presided over by dean of the faculty of preventive and social medicine Professor Dr Md Atiqul Haque.

Associate professor of public health and informatics department and chief researcher of the registry data, Dr Md Khalekuzzaman, said that the purpose of this study was to determine the cancer situation among the people of the country.聽

Using specially developed internet-based cancer registry software, the study has been conducted from July 1, 2023 to June 30 in Pumdi, Shahedal, Araibaria and Gobindpur unions of Hossainpur of Kishoreganj, said Khalekuzzaman.

The research data was collected by visiting each house and conducting interviews of 1 lakh 16 thousand 4 hundred 75 people living in 27787 houses. Among them, the number of cancer patients registered is 133, he added.

Line director of the Directorate General of Health Service Professor Dr Mohammad Robed Amin and director of Bangladesh Cancer Society Hospital Professor Dr Mohammad Abdul Hai participated in the open discussion at the seminar.
