The University Grants Commission of Bangladesh on Tuesday night requested all the public and private universities in the country to keep their institutions closed and vacate students’ residential halls until further notice.
The UGC call was made on the day when the ruling Awami League’s student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League and police clashed with quota protesters from different universities and colleges across the country, resulting in at least six deaths and scores injuries.
The UGC made the request in a notice that said that all public and private universities and all medical, textile, engineering and others colleges under the universities would remain closed until further notice, as per the decision of the government and considering the safety of the students.
The notice also requested to vacate the students’ residential halls for the sake of safety.
The National University also announced to close all its tertiary level colleges and educational institutions for an indefinite period amid the ongoing protests.
In a press release, the university authorities said that the educational institutions under it would remain closed until further notice.
