Thirty citizens, including cultural personalities, academics, and professionals, expressed concerns over the violent clashes in various parts of the country amid the ongoing quota movement on Tuesday.

They also demanded a judicial inquiry into the deaths of students involved in the clashes.


The statement was sent to the media by freedom fighter, cultural activist, and filmmaker Nasir Uddin Yousuf.

‘We are seeking an immediate resolution to this conflict. Students are demanding reforms to the quota system in government job recruitment, and the High Court has also affirmed the government’s right to implement necessary reforms. In this situation, we demand discussions between the government and students on quota system reforms,’ read the statement.

The signatories to the statement include Syed Hasan Imam, Anupam Sen, Ramendu Majumdar, Ferdausi Majumdar, Sarwar Ali, Mofidul Hoque, Mamunur Rashid, Abdus Selim, Khushi Kabir, Ghulam Quddus, and Lucky Enam, among others.

On Monday, 24 citizens issued a statement, condemning the slogans used by quota protesters at Dhaka University Sunday midnight.

The signatories of the statement included Syed Hasan Imam, Anupam Sen, Ferdousi Majumdar, Sarwar Ali, Mofidul Hoque, Mamunur Rashid, Abdus Selim, Nasir Uddin Yousuff, Ghulam Quddus, and Ahkam Ullah, among others.

Also, the cultural organisation ‘Sammilita Sangskritik Jote’ released a statement, condemning the same slogan. The statement was issued by SSJ general secretary Ahkam Ullah and president Ghulam Quddus on July 15.
