At least one student was killed on Thursday after jumping into a lake in Madaripur as students demanding quota reform in government jobs were chased by the police and Chhatra League activists during the students’ protest programme.
The deceased is Dipta Dey, 21, a second year student of Madaripur Government College.
Fire Service and Civil Defence Madaripur warehouse inspector, Sheikh Ahaduzzaman, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·, ‘The divers have recovered the body of one of the two students who drowned in the local Shakuni lake.’
Ahaduzzaman said that the student’s body was taken away from the fire service personnel by the agitating students.
‘The dive for searching another student is still underway [till 2:30pm]. On the other hand, clashes are continuing between students and police as students are protesting with the body,’ he said.
Responding to the call of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, when ordinary students started protesting in front of the Madaripur Police Superintendent's office from Thursday morning, when the police and Chhatra League workers chased them, two students jumped into the Shakuni lake in fear, according to the news of a private television channel.
According to the news, two students got tired and drowned in the lake after swimming towards the southern end of the lake for a while and later the locals informed the fire service.
Meanwhile, since Thursday morning, the ‘Complete Shutdown’ programme is being enforced across the country by students calling for a one-point demand for quota reform in government jobs, protesting against the Prime Minister's adverse comments against the agitators and the attack by the police and the ruling Awami League’s student wing Chhatra League on the agitators.
