
The authorities suspended railway services across the country for an indefinite period on Saturday due to passengers’ safety.
Bangladesh railway issued a notice in the evening in this regard.
The notice read that the operation of the trains across the country had been suspended until further notice for the interest of passengers’ safety as rail tracks, stations, signals, level crossing gates, rail engine and compartments were heavily damaged by the miscreants in recent times.
Railway’s traffic department director Nahid Hasan Khan said that three trains had been vandalised and fire was set on these so far.
On Saturday, the country saw the third running day of the ‘complete shutdown’, enforced by the students, waging a movement for reform in quota system in public services.
Communications across Bangladesh suffered heavy disruptions for the third day in a row on the day with Dhaka virtually cut off from the rest of the country.
Rail communications between Dhaka and the rest of Bangladesh snapped since at about 12:00pm on Thursday as the students blocked the rail tracks at Mohakhali in the capital.
