The students of Jahangirnagar University on Saturday built a monument on the campus in memory of the students who were killed amid the ongoing anti-quota movement.
Under the banner of Students Movement against Discrimination, they blocked the Dhaka-Aricha Highway around 3:30pm, flouting the countrywide government-imposed curfew.
After about an hour of the blockade, the students marched towards the campus and laid the foundation stone of the monument in front of the university’s old Fazilatunnesa Hall.
The foundation stone of the monument has been initially titled as ‘Shaheed Smriti Stambha’.
The monument, however, will be renamed later following further discussion, the students said.
During the rally in front of the monument, the protesters demanded apology from the prime minister Sheikh Hasina over the causalities reported due to her alleged ‘provoked speech’.
Jahidul Islam Emon, one of the coordinators of the platform, said, ‘The monument is built to recall the sacrifice of the martyrs during our legitimate movement.’
He also said that the students, who sacrificed their lives to form a discrimination free society, deserve such honour.
The protesters also demanded resignation of home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader for going tough against the students’ peaceful demonstrations.
The families of the martyrs must be compensated and the government should recruit at least one member from each of the deceased family, they added.
