The foreign ministry is scheduled to hold a briefing for foreign diplomats in Dhaka at state guesthouse Jamuna today, a day after the imposition of curfew to protect people’s life and the state’s property amid the ongoing anti-quota student movement.

‘We have organised a diplomatic briefing on Sunday over the country’s present situation,’ foreign minister Hasan Mahmud told reporters at his Segunbagicha office.

He said that the foreign missions were being informed through a statement that the government had decided through consultation with all like-minded political parties to impose curfew and deploy military troops in aid of civil power until the situation’s return to normalcy.

He said that the prime minister’s visits to Spain and Brazil respectively scheduled for July 21–22 and July 24–26 were cancelled considering the developing situation and the respective countries were communicated her decision.

The foreign minister thanked foreign diplomats for refraining from giving any statements over the developing situation.

He also called upon foreign outlets not to publish any reports without verifying information properly, alleging that some of them published distorted and false information.

The government imposed a curfew across the country for an indefinite period from midnight past Friday as at least 67 people were killed on that day alone taking the death toll to over 130 in the past five days of protests for reform of quota in government jobs.
