The police arrested the president of a local unit of Sramik League and another person for their alleged involvement in setting a bus of the state-owned Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation on fire in Chattogram city.

The arrested were identified as Didarul Alam, 40, president of ruling Awami League’s associate body Sramik League’s Bayezid Bostami unit in the post city, and Masud Rana, 40, a resident of the city’s Oxygen area.

Hathazari police officer-in-charge Abdur Rahman confirmed the news and told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Wednesday that Masud Rana, formerly a driver’s assistant at a BRTC bus, was arrested on Monday night.

‘Rana confessed that Didar asked him to burn the bus in exchange of money. After his confession, we arrested Didar. Both were produced in court today,’ he added.

Later, both were sent to jail.

Habibur Rahman, acting president of the Chattogram Mahanagar unit of Sramik League said that Didar was the victim of a conspiracy and he never committed such a crime.

Julfikar Ali, manager of BRTC depot in the city, said that they tried to save their properties, but some miscreants set four buses on fire on Monday night.

‘We identified Rana from CCTV footage and informed the police,’ he said.

Julfikar filed a case with the Hathazari police in this regard.
