Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday said BNP, Jamaat and Shibir carried out acts of vandalism nationwide to undermine the country’s development and tarnish its image abroad.
She called upon the people to play a role in exposing the perpetrators and bringing them to justice.
‘They, who are involved in such incidents, must be identified by searching every nook and cranny of the country. I am seeking support from the people to identify and expose the perpetrators and bring them to justice,’ she said after visiting the BTV Bhaban at Rampura in Dhaka to inspect the damage to the state-owned national TV station resulting from an attack carried out on July 18 by an unidentified group of people.
The prime minister said the BNP and Jamaat carried out nationwide arson attacks and acts of vandalism in 2013 when they torched 3,800 vehicles, 29 trains and eight launches and this time they caused massive destruction across the country from July 17, 2024 morning by cashing in on the students’ quota reforms movement.
‘But, the characteristic of arson attacks is different this time compared to the prior ones. They used gunpowder to start fires and everything turned to ashes instantly,’ she said.
