The validity of vehicle documents and driving licences has been given auto-extension till September 16 this year as these services under the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority at present remains suspended.

Besides, vehicle owners and drivers would be able to pay taxes and fees for renewing vehicle documents and driving licences without any fine till September 16.

The BRTA on Wednesday issued two separate circulars giving the details.

Since July 18 all these services have remained suspended.

One of the circulars read that miscreants set fire to, vandalised and looted BRTA’s headquarters in the Banani area in the capital on July 18-19.

Following the incidents, the server and IS inside the BRTA Bhaban were damaged, it added.

As a result BRTA cannot provide the motor vehicle related services such as issuing or updating fitness, tax-token, route permit, driving licence, collecting advance income tax and registering vehicles, the circular also said, adding that initiatives to make the services and IS active are ongoing.

It also said that against this backdrop, following the Road Transport Act 2018’s section 124 (1) (tha) the validity dates of the motor vehicles’ fitness, tax-token, route permit, advance income tax and driving licences, which were scheduled to be expired from July 16 to September 15, had been extended till September 16 this year.

Another circular read that following permission from the Finance Division all vehicle documents (fitness certificate, tax token and route permit) and driving licences could be renewed without any fine till September 16 this year.

Both orders came into effect immediately.

BRTA director for operation Md Lokman Hossain Mollah said that the decisions were taken to facilitate the service-seekers.

‘As our services are suspended at present, we have given the auto-extensions validity so that the service-seekers will not be prosecuted by the law enforcement agencies,’ he mentioned.

Replying to a question he said that even if they resumed the services before September 16 these extensions would be applicable for the service seekers.

Recently, student protests for quota reform in government services spread countrywide and saw at least 213 people killed in clashes and their aftermath between July 16 and July 28.

The initiative of waiving fines for renewing vehicle documents and driving licences is made time to time.

Earlier this year, the BRTA allowed the vehicle owners and drivers to pay taxes and fees for renewing vehicle documents and driving licences without any fine till April 15.
