Chief of army staff general Waker-Uz-Zaman on Monday said that an interim government would be formed to run the country as prime minister Sheikh Hasina resigned from her post.

鈥榃e had a nice discussion where we have decided that we will form an interim government,鈥 he said in a speech after his meeting with the leaders of key political parties.


The army chief said that through an interim government all activities of the country would be conducted.

鈥楴ow we will go to the president to discuss it and form an interim government to run the country.鈥

He urged all to cooperate聽 with him refraining from further vandalism, killings and clashes.

鈥楶lease cooperate with me. Kindly, refrain from any more vandalism, killings and clashes.鈥

The army chief said that he was quite sure that if they worked together they could proceed towards something good.

鈥業 am giving you word, we will ensure justice for all killings and injustice. Keep faith in the army and armed forces. I am taking all the responsibilities 鈥 safety of your life and properties. I am giving you a word, you will not be disappointed,鈥 he said.

He said that all the demands would be met and peace and discipline would be restored in the country.

鈥楾hrough clash and confrontation, we can achieve nothing,鈥 he said, urging all to refrain from any destruction, anarchy and clash.

鈥業nshAllah, we will march towards a beautiful future together. Justice will be ensured for each death and injustice,鈥 said the army chief.

Thanking those who came for discussion at his invitation, the army chief said, 鈥業 invited them. It is very nice of them that they have come.

And we had a good discussion. I think this discussion will be fruitful.鈥

鈥楬ave patience. Give us some time. Together, we will be able to solve all the problems,鈥 he said.

He said that much damage had been done, assets were damaged and people were dying.

Top leaders from Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Jatiya Party and others, including Asif Nazrul, were present at the meeting.

Asif Nazrul conveyed a message to the students and hoped that students would remain calm.

The army chief said that if peace was restored, there was no need to impose curfew. The army would continue working for peace and discipline in the country.

He hoped that the situation would improve with his speech.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee member Mirza Abbas, Jatiya Party chairman GM Quader, leaders Mujibul Haque Chunnu and Anisul Islam Mahmud, Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh leader Mamunul Haque, Dhaka University law department professor Asif Nazrul, Zonayed Saki of Ganosamhati Andolon, Khelafat Majlish鈥檚 Syed Md Faizul Karim, Bangladesh Jamat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqul Islam Masud, Hamidur Rahman Azad attended in the meeting held at the army headquarters.
