A low pressure formed over the Bay of Bengal sparked heavy rain and landslide fears in Bangladesh, prompting authorities to issue warnings asking people to remain alert.

The low pressure was formed over the north-west Bay of Bengal and the adjoining Gangetic-West Bengal-Bangladesh coast, said the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.

‘Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur over Bangladesh over the next three to four days,’ said meteorologist Bazlur Rashid.

In a special heavy rainfall warning issued at 10:00am on Friday for 72 hours, the BMD said that due to active monsoon, heavy to very heavy rainfall was likely to occur at places over Khulna, Barishal and  Chattogram divisions during next 72 hours.

The rain could trigger land slide at places over the hilly regions of chattogram division, the BMD added.

In a marine warning issued at 9:30am on Friday, the BMD said that deep convection was taking place over the north Bay of Bengal and gusty/squally weather might affect the maritime ports, the north Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of Bangladesh.

The BMD asked maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra to hoist local cautionary signal three, asking all fishing boats and trawlers to stay close to the coast until further notice.

In the 24 hours until 6:00pm on Friday, the BMD said that Bangladesh’s highest maximum rainfall of 96mm was recorded at Hatiya.

Bangladesh’s highest maximum temperature of 36.5C was recorded at Rajarhat in Kurigram.
