Workers of a chemical factory on Sunday blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway at Barabari area in Gazipur, demanding arrears and reopening the factory.

People of the area said that the workers of the National Chemical Manufacturing Company Ltd went to the gate of the closed factory to press their demands, and at one point they blocked the nearby Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway.


They said that workers made blockade on the highway with unused electric pole, halting traffic movement.

The Gazipur Metropolitan Police鈥檚 Gachha police station officer-in-charge Ziaul Islam said that workers left the highway when police talked to the factory owners about their demands over phone and assured them to meet their demands.

Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments Gazipur area inspector Maksudur Rahman said that a tripartite meeting was called on August 21 to settle the issue.

Workers said that the factory authority declared lay-off on April 9 without paying wage and allowances of over 200 workers for seven months.

The factory authority repeatedly assured workers to pay the arrears to pay them however they did not.
