
The interim government’s education adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud said on Monday that all senior officials in more than 40 public universities had disappeared following the overthrow of the Sheikh Hasina regime.
The country has 55 public universities.
‘It is a big problem to reopen all these universities as they are now without guardians,’ he said, adding that across the country it was the same picture in administration.
As from the first officer to the fourth one, all are absent in these universities, ‘so who will operate these universities?’ the adviser asked while talking to reporters at the planning ministry on the day.Â
Meanwhile, two deans of Dhaka University along with pro-vice-chancellor and treasurer of Jahangirnagar University resigned from their respective posts on Monday amid student protests demanding their resignation. Â
Same day, students held demonstration in Barishal University demanding the resignation of the vice-chancellor and proctor and set a 24-hour ultimatum.
At least 18 public university vice-chancellors stepped down after the ouster of the Sheikh Hasina-led government on August 5 amid a mass uprising led by students.
They started to resign as students at different universities gave them ultimatums to do so bringing allegations against them that they aided the then ruling Awami League and the police to prevent students from continuing the protests.
Many other senior officials of these universities have also resigned.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Dhaka University reported that following students’ demand arts faculty dean professor Abdul Bashir and fine art faculty dean professor Nisar Hossain submitted their resignation letters on the day.
However, as recently the university’s vice-chancellor professor ASM Maksud Kamal resigned from his post, these resignations would not come into immediate effect.
In the morning the students started protests demanding resignation of law faculty dean professor Md Rahmat Ullah’s resignation. Professor Rahmat did not resign till the evening.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Jahangirnagar University reported that the university’s pro-vice-chancellor (administrative affairs) professor Sheikh Manzurul Huq and treasurer professor Rasheda Akhter tendered resignation via email.
University acting registrar ABM Azizur Rahman confirmed the news.
The university students locked their offices on Sunday, alleging that they aided the police and the then government in attacking the students during the protests.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Barishal reported that the students held a protest march and rally demanding the resignation of Barishal University vice-chancellor professor Mohammad Badruzzaman Bhuiyan and proctor professor Md Abdul Kaium in next 24 hours, alleging that they harassed the students during the movement.
