A case was filed against a former officer of Detective Branch of police on charge of threatening a youth to kill in crossfire and collecting Tk 5 lakh from his father as extortion in 2019.
Masud Rana, father of the victim youth, filed the case against Mahabub Hasan, a former sub-inspector under the Rajshahi Metropolitan DB Police, with the Boalia model police station on Wednesday night, said officer-in-charge SM Masud Pervej.
The OC said that they would investigate the case and take necessary actions.
According to the case statement, sub-inspector Mahabub in plainclothes went to Masud Rana’s house on October 23, 2019, and took his son Rajib Ali, 31, at gunpoint to Shimla Bagan in the Rajshahi city.
Mahbub then contacted Rajib’s father over the phone and threatened that he would kill his son in crossfire if he did not pay him (police) Tk 5 lakh.
Having been frightened, Masud Rana gave Tk 5 lakh in cash in the Shimla Bagan area and the latter assured him of releasing his son.
But, Rajib was shown arrested in a false drug case and was sent to jail on the following day, the case statement read.
Rajib, who secured his bail sixteen months later, met SI Mahbub a month ago and demanded his money back.
But, Mahbub behaved rudely and threatened to kill Rajib if the latter kept asking for money, the case statement further read.
Contacted, SI Mahabub denied all the allegations.
He said that they caught Rajib red-handed at his home with drugs and filed a case.
‘The case is now under trial. Due to the country’s present situation, Rajib and his father are trying to take an opportunity,’ he said.
In reply to a question over his expulsion from the police, Mahabub said that he was attached to the Boalia model police in 2021 and later to the Units Armed Police Battalion in 2022.
‘But, I could not join the APBn because of my family problems as my father had recently died and my mother was sick,’ he added.
