National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports observed the 18th anniversary of Phulbari Day, placing wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital.

In 2006, while holding a rally to oppose the Asia Energy’s open-pit coal mining, three protesters – Aminul, Tarikul and Salekin – were killed in firing by law enforcers during the then BNP-led government.


Former member secretary of the national committee, Anu Muhammad, demanded the full implementation of the Phulbari agreement, and trials of the killers of Phulbari firing.

He said that people’s movement for protecting national interest had never failed.

Dhaka University teacher and founding member secretary of the national committee, MM Akash, called on the interim government to take steps to full implementation of the Phubari agreement.

The Communist Party of Bangladesh general secretary Ruhin Hossain Prince conducted the short rally.

Different political organisations, including the Socialist Party of Bangladesh, Ganosamhati Andolan, Revolutionary Workers Party, SPB (Marxist), Revolutionary Communist Party, Bangladesh Jasod, Bangladesher Samyabadi Andolan, and different left-leaning student organisations attended the rally.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Dinajpur reported that the Phulbari movement organisers brought out a procession from in front of the Nimtoli crossing and placed wreath on monument on the bank of Choto Jamuna River.

Later, at a rally held at Asat Chatwar in thre upazila, national committee of Phulbari unit Syed Saiful Islam Jewel chaired.

Jatiya Gonofront chief coordinator Tipu Biswas, general secretary of the Revolutionary Communist League Ikbal Kair Jahid, Samyabadi Andolan coordinator Subhrangshu Chakrabortty, Ganosamhati Andolan central leader Dipok Roy, CPB leader Altaf Hossain and others spoke at the rally.
