The fire that broke out at Gazi Auto Tyres Factory in Rupganj upazila of Narayanganj on Sunday night was yet to completely douse after burning for nearly 44 hours on Tuesday, leaving the factory at risk of collapse.

The district administration on the day formed an eight-member committee headed by the additional district magistrate Hamidur Rahman, to investigate the incident, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Narayanganj reported.

Fire Service and Civil Defence vice-principal for training complex Md Manikuzzaman told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Tuesday that firefighters were still working to douse the blaze.

‘Rescue operations have yet to begun as there is still significant heat inside the building,’ he said, adding that there was still a risk of the fire reigniting due to the residual heat inside the structure.

He also said that the condition of the building was very risky as it was likely to collapse at any moment.

Md Manikuzzaman added that no casualties had been found yet as of 9:30pm on Tuesday.

Narayanganj district deputy commissioner Mahmudul Haque went to the spot on Tuesday where he said that the fire service would start the rescue operation inside the building soon.

‘In addition to listing, search cells will be formed,’ he added.

Meanwhile, relatives of the missing persons were seen waiting for their family members’ returns at the factory gate.

Earlier on Monday, they claimed that at least 174 people, who went inside the factory during the looting on Sunday night, were missing.

Fire service officials said that some relatives claimed that their family members were missing and requested fire officials to let the families know the updates.

They said that they had collected some of their family members’ phone numbers to inform the updates if found any.

Hundreds of people broke into the factory in the Rupshi area on Sunday afternoon, hours after Gazi Group chairman and former Awami league lawmaker Golam Dastagir Gazi was arrested and later put on six-day remand.

Later, at about 9:00pm, unidentified miscreants allegedly set fire to the ground floor of the factory, triggering the massive blaze.

Fire service station officer Talha Bin Zasim said that from the spot they so far rescued 14 people, all of whom were saved on Sunday.

The cause and extent of damages caused by the fire could not be known immediately, he said.
