Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit on Wednesday froze bank accounts of Salman F Rahman, former private industry and investment adviser to ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, and Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, a former lawmaker and paternal cousin of Sheikh Hasina.

The BFIU sent the instruction to all banks and financial institutions, asking them to freeze transactions for accounts held in the names of Sheikh Selim, his wife Fatema Selim, their聽 sons Sheikh Fazle Fahim and Sheikh Fazle Naim and daughter Sheikh Amina Sultana Sonia.

Besides, accounts of Salman F Rahman and his son Ahmed Shayan Fazlur Rahman also were frozen.

The BFIU also took similar action against Akiz Uddin, former private secretary to S Alam and deputy managing director of Islami Bank Bangladesh, who managed S Alam Group鈥檚 operations and was involved in financial misconduct under S Alam influence.

The order was issued under the Money Laundering Prevention Act 2019.

The BFIU also instructed banks and financial institutions to send their account-related documents, such as account opening forms, KYC, and transaction details, within five working days of the notice.

The series of account-freezing of the ministers of the former Awami League government came after the fall of Sheikh Hasina as prime minister.

Awami League president Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to India on August 5 amid a mass uprising spearheaded by students.
