Finance adviser Salehuddin Ahmed on Thursday asked for extension of International Monetary Fund鈥檚 current loan programme in Bangladesh.

He called for additional loans during an online meeting with IMF mission chief in Bangladesh Chris Papageorgiou.

An official of the finance ministry said that the finance adviser鈥檚 meeting with the IMF mission chief was positive.

The official said that the IMF officials were likely to visit the country next month in this regard.

The meeting was arranged against the backdrop of a recent disclosure by Bangladesh Bank governor Ahsan H Mansur that additional $3 billion to be sought from IMF to tackle the dollar shortage.

The amount will be additional to the current $4.7 billion loan programme begun in the past year during the recently ousted political regime.

The IMF already disbursed around $2.3 billion dollar under the current loan programme.

The remaining $2.4 billion will be disbursed in tranches by May 2026.

Finance secretary Md Khairuzzaman Mozumder attended the meeting.
