The Dhaka Union of Journalists on Friday demanded the interim government to drop the names of professional journalists from the list of accused in murder cases filed following the killings of students and people during the recent students movement.

In a press release, the pro-Awami League union president Sohel Haider Chowdhury and general secretary Akter Hossain said that after the change of power, many professional journalists were accused in murder cases filed in Dhaka and other districts.

The DUJ estimated that over 50 journalists, including leaders of different professional bodies for journalists, were accused in murder cases, which was not a good signal.

‘Case might be filed against any journalist, if any specific allegations found against her or him. But not in allegation of supporting the ousted government,’ the press release said.

The union committed to the spirit of the War of Independence said that many journalists were attacked and harassed on court premises, which could not be acceptable.

Demanding the withdrawal of the cases, the leaders said that the random cases against journalists spreading panic among the people and could stand against the spirit of the movement to build discrimination free country.
