Bus communications between Naogaon and the rest of the country remained suspended on Sunday without any prior notice as the district transport workers enforced a strike for an indefinite period, demanding a ban on the movement of CNG-run three-wheelers on the highway.
Azharul Islam, president of Naogaon District Motor Sramik Union, said that they held a meeting with the transport workers on Sunday, and unanimously decided to enforce the strike for an indefinite period until their demand was met.
‘Accidents are occurring frequently due to reckless driving of the three-wheelers as they do not follow any rules and regulations while driving on the highway,’ said Azharul Islam, mentioning that the district administration had assured them several times that they would take stern action in this regard.
‘But, we did not see any reflection of their words. That is why, we have enforced the strike,’ he added.
Shafiqul Islam, president of the Naogaon CNG-run Auto-rickshaw Owner’s and Workers’ Association, said that in a meeting with the bus owners and workers earlier, the district administration asked them not to ply CNG-run auto-rickshaws and three-wheelers on the highway from 8:00am to 4:00pm.
‘We have been following this instruction since then. But, the Motor Sramik Union leaders are stopping and blocking auto-rickshaw and three-wheelers’ movement outside of the fixed timetable,’ he alleged.
Naogaon acting deputy commissioner Rashedul Hasan said that he had called for a meeting with the leaders of the two groups to solve the problem.
Earlier, district’s Motor Sramik Union enforced similar strikes more than eight times in the past one year.
