A college principal was allegedly forced to resign from his position on Thursday in Faridpur after he was beaten.
Md Obaidur Rahman, the principal of Nabokam Polli University College, was allegedly beaten with hammers by a section of students and some outsiders.
The incident took place after the education adviser to the interim government, Wahiduddin Mahmud, issued an order on September 3 urging all to stop forcing and harassing teachers to resign.
The Thursday incident took place at Nabokam Polli University College under Jadunnadi union of Saltha upazila in Faridpur at around 10:00am on the day.
Obaidur Rahman was forced to sign a paper regarding his resignation.
Saltha upazila nirbahi officer Md Anisur Rahman confirmed the incident.
‘After hearing the incident, we, along with members of Bangladesh army and the police rushed to the spot,’ he said, adding that the situation was brought under control.
He mentioned that earlier on September 1 the college students formed a human chain demanding resignation of the principal.
The students were demanding the resignation following his alleged involvement in irregularities in the college, said other sources.Â
‘That day we went there and solved the problem,’ upazila nirbahi officer Anisur Rahman said, adding, ‘Today’s incident is unacceptable.’
Identities of those involved in the incident would be revealed through investigation as the principal filed a general diary with the Saltha police station, he said, adding that he informed the district administration of the incident. Â
Following the ouster of the Sheikh Hasina-led government on August 5 amid a student-led mass uprising, many vice-chancellors of public universities, head teachers and principals of different schools and colleges have also been forced to resign across the country.
