Ashraful Hoq Chowdhury

Rear admiral Ashraful Hoq Chowdhury has been appointed as vice-chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University.

He was appointed as the VC of the BSMRMU on Monday, said a BSMRMU press release.


The flag officer was commissioned in the executive branch of Bangladesh Navy on January 1 in 1988.

His maritime expertise encompasses commanding various naval ships, including the Missile Boats, Patrol Crafts, OPV and Frigate BNS ABU BAKR.

He has also commanded naval base BNS HAJI MOHSIN. His diverse Inter service appointment includes director general CMR in the Armed Forces Division, Col GS in Directorate General of Forces Intelligence, senior navy instructor, and directing staff in defence services command and Staff College, Mirpur. 

The admiral has commanded Flotilla (West) as COMFLOT (West) when the first test firing of anti-submarine torpedo was conducted under his command.

He took over the command of Khulna naval area as COMKHUL. Thereafter, the admiral took over the helm of the Bangladesh Coastguard as director general.

He is an alumnus of National Defence University, Beijing, Armed Forces War College, National Defence College Mirpur, Defence Services Command and Staff College, Mirpur and the US Naval War College, Rhode Island.

Serving under the ‘Blue Helmet’ mandate in the United Nations mission in Sudan exemplified his commitment to global peacekeeping. Rear Admiral Ashraf also represented BN in various seminars and high-level delegation both at home and abroad.
