International Crimes Tribunal chief prosecutor Md Tajul Islam on Monday said that efforts were on to collect evidence of genocides those had been allegedly committed by past Awami League government while attempting to quell the recent anti-discrimination student movement.
‘The investigation agency of the International Crimes Tribunal is sending letters to all the media outlets, public and private hospitals, civil surgeon offices, deputy commissioners and superintendents of police, seeking evidence of alleged genocides,’ he said while briefing media at the ICT.
The chief prosecutor said that they had started visiting hospitals for information and evidence of genocides and the process would continue.
He urged all authorities concerned to provide the information and evidence of alleged genocides those took place in July and August.
‘We are even sending letters to the authorities of large graveyards. The main witnesses of this movement were the students. We will exchange views with the coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement,’ Tajul added.
Earlier, the newly appointed ICT chief prosecutor said that necessary steps would be taken to bring ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina back to the country to stand trial over alleged crimes against humanity and genocide during the student protests.
‘As she [Sheikh Hasina] is considered to be the main perpetrator and has fled the country, we would initiate the legal process to bring her back. We will try to make her stand trial after bringing her back to the country,’ Tajul Islam said in his maiden interaction with the media after assuming the office on Sunday.
