Two members of the Rangpur Metropolitan Police were arrested by the Police Bureau of Investigation on Monday in connection with the killing of anti-quota movement leader and Begum Rokeya University student Abu Sayeed on July 16.

Abu Sayeed was shot dead allegedly by the police during the countrywide student protests demanding the reformation of quota system in government jobs.

The arrested cops are assistant sub-inspector Md Amir Ali and constable Sujon Chandra Ray. They were suspended on August 3 amid an investigation into Abu Sayeed murder case.

Rangpur PBI superintendent ABM Zakir Hosain said that PBI arrested the duo Monday afternoon on primary suspicion regarding their involvement in murdering Sayeed.

The SP said that they would produce them before a court in Rangpur on Tuesday.

Earlier, PBI forwarded a requisition to RMP to hand over the two policemen and took permission from the police headquarters in this connection.

On August 12, Abu Sayeed murder case was transferred to PBI Rangpur for investigation.

On August 18, Sayeed’s elder brother Ramjan Ali filed a petition with a Rangpur court to register a case against seventeen people including former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun and 30-35 unnamed people.

After hearing Ramjan’s petition, Rangpur additional chief metropolitan magistrate Raju Ahmed ordered Tajhat police to record the case on the day.

Rangpur Range deputy inspector general Abdul Baten, RMP Commissioner Md Moniruzzaman, deputy police commissioner Abu Maruf Hossain, assistant police commissioner Arifuzzaman, assistant police commissioner Imran Hossain, Tajhat Police Station officer-in-charge Rabiul Islam, assistant sub-inspector Syed Amir Ali and constable Sujon Chandra Ray were also made accused in the case.

The police had earlier claimed that Abu Sayeed was killed in the protesters’ firing and that the university student was not a victim of police firing.

Abu Sayeed, a 12th batch student of the English department at Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur and a coordinator of the anti-quota movement, was the first student killed in police firing during the movement.

A video footage showed the police shooting Abu Sayeed, who posed no physical threat to the law enforcers standing alone on the road holding no weapons, was killed in police firing during the quota reform demonstration in front of the entrance of the university.

The July 16 murder angered people across the country leading to the fall of AL government on August 5.

A photo of Sayeed taken before he was shot went viral on social media platforms where he was seen braving the police action with his hands up and holding a stick in his right hand.
