Students of Jahangirnagar University demonstrated on the campus on Monday, demanding a ban on the politics of teachers, students, officers, and employees of the university on the campus.

Under the banner of the Student Movement Against Discrimination, they formed a human chain on the road adjacent to the university’s central Shaheed Minar.

They also emphasised on starting the operation of the JU Central Students Union instead of allowing the activities of student organisations allied to different political parties.

Addressing the human chain, Nakib Mahmud of the economics department, said, ‘We cannot allow diminishing the spirit of the students’ mass uprising that gave us a wonderful opportunity in building an oppression-free state.’

Claiming the allowance of politics on the campus as a betrayal of the sacrifices of people during the students’ movement, he said, ‘The voices of students must be addressed through the elected body.’

They also criticised the newly appointed JU vice-chancellor Professor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan for taking so-called ‘protocol’ from the leaders of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, during his visit to the national monument on Sunday.
